Remember When — Stories Painted From Memory
William A. Burton
“Remember When” is more than a painting—it’s a time machine. A tribute to childhood joy in its rawest form, this piece captures three Black kids deep in a game of marbles, locked into a world made of dirt, chalk and imagination. Before Wi-Fi and swipe screens, there were these simple moments that felt infinite.
Drawn from the artist’s own memories growing up in the projects, this scene speaks to a generation who found freedom in front steps and alleyways. Marbles wasn’t just a game—it was a rite of passage. You learned how to focus, how to win, how to lose, and how to laugh loud with your crew even when the world outside didn’t make it easy.
Back when the block was our playground
and joy came in glass spheres,
we battled for braggin’ rights
on crooked chalk lines and concrete fears.
No apps, just aim—steady hands, dusty knees,
the clack of marbles was music,
and kings were crowned with ease.
“Remember When” invites you to feel that again. To hear the echo of kids' voices bouncing off brick walls, to smell the summer air thick with energy, to remember what fun felt like when it was earned, not downloaded. This piece is a love letter to the hood’s lost arcade, where the floor was the board, and every marble was a dream you held in your hand.
Who played to win but stayed to belong.
Who carries the past in color, in texture, in spirit.THIS IS A MEMORY.
THIS IS CULTURE.
THIS... IS US.
Before the finished piece existed, there was a memory, a pencil and an empty surface.

WE DON'T HAVE TO
LOOK ALIKE TO
LOVE ALIKE.

Bring your differences to the table.
There’s still room for love.
The movement centers human connection across different colors, cultures, languages, backgrounds, nations, and experiences. Difference is not a threat to our humanity. It is part of its depth.

INTELLIGENT HUMANS 4 LIFE
IH4L is the philosophy supporting the wider 1 LOVE world: awareness, humility and responsibility expressed through human connection.
THE MESSAGE BECOMES CONVERSATION.
The Table is where visual communication becomes dialogue, listening, learning and connection—where people bring their differences without surrendering their shared humanity.

I CREATE
BECAUSE I
WAS CREATED.
WILLIAM A. BURTON
This isn't a pose. This is the practice.
ART BECAME
A BRIDGE.
William’s creative practice developed during a period of incarceration, when other incarcerated men approached him to create portraits of loved ones and artwork for envelopes carrying letters home.
He discovered that art could carry memory, affection, identity, and humanity beyond physical walls.
That chapter does not define him. It revealed an enduring principle behind his work: creativity can give form to something another person carries within.
YOUR MIND
IS THE CANVAS.
The work begins by listening—perceiving the thought, memory, message, identity, or imagined world someone carries and finding a visual language that lets others experience it.
THOUGHTS What lives within.
WILL The force that brings it forward.
FORM What others can experience.
WHAT'S LIVING
IN YOUR MIND?
You don't need design language to begin. Tell me what you're building, what it means, and what you want people to experience.

A THOUGHT, GIVEN DIRECTION.
THOUGHT → DISCOVERY → INTERPRETATION → FORM
Start with the thought.
BRING ME
THE THOUGHT.
It doesn't have to be fully formed. That's why we're here.
- What are you creating?
- What made now the right time to bring it forward?
- What does this idea mean to you?
- Who needs to experience it?
- What should people see, feel, or understand?
NO PERFECT BRIEF REQUIRED.
Bring the thought in its current form.
